Initial “Bad” submission to NGC ’15 *Public View*

Late last fall Kevin V. brought a fake 1798 “S-158” to light on Copper Notes; the “coin” was in an NGC slab and part of a larger submission including 9 early coppers, 2 half cents & 7 large cents. This submission also included a “suspicious” 1803 half cent, 1794 “S-44” and 1796 “S-93” large cents documented by Kevin and Bill E. as fakes in the January ’16 PW. Further review of the remaining examples produced a matching fake 1796 “S-85” to Kevin’s PW example and the prototype of a series of fake 1793 “S5”s”, a prolific group of sinister coppers! With the help of NGC (Paul S.) we were able to recover the pics of this group to share with the copper collecting community, and they are attached to this post; I have also included pics of the cert’s from the NGC web site for reference (the one lone pic of “S-158” without a cert number was actually from the “Variety Plus” web page, the highest “grade” example of the 7 documented fakes to date).
